Darlene Cohen, Su Rei Ken Po, Great Spirit Manifesting Dharma, passed into the great mystery at 1:15 AM this morning.

She was with Tony, Ethan and Matthew, and her death was seamless. Tony says that one moment she was breathing and the next moment she wasn’t. She was in no pain, and the family had been with her for many hours.

At this moment, she is dressed in her priest robes, with her beautiful lavender rakusu, on a red cloth on the bed in the main room upstairs at RRZ. She looks incredibly peaceful, and like she is about to smile. She has been washed, and lovingly bathed with yerba santa tea collected from Tassajara. We will begin chanting in the Dai Shin Dharani upstairs shortly, and then move down to the Zendo with her for the Taiyo ceremony, which will be at 7 AM. All are welcome to be part of the ceremony, which is attached so that people further away can have a feel for what we will be doing. And of course please feel free to do your own version.

We will be sitting with Darlene for the next day and a half at RRZ — all are welcome, and she will be cremated shortly after that.

Safe passage to Darlene. Now she will be able to cavort with the Buddhas and ancestors and devas in a different form.

Ease and comfort to Tony, Ethan, Matthew and all of us who loved Darlene.

May we all find comfort in Sangha and the wisdom of Darlene’s teachings and joy of her essence.

Darlene Cohen, Su Rei Ken Po, Great Spirit Manifesting Dharma, died at 1:15 this morning after battling cancer. She began sitting at the San Francisco Zen Center in 1970, was a lineage holder in the Suzuki-roshi lineage, and was most recently a teacher at the Russian River Zendo. The sangha will be sitting with her there for the next day and a half and all are welcome.
